Really love this car. Yes, it rattles like a 20+ year old Mitsubishi (hell, my 2011 rattles like crazy) but those hard pulls at the end of the video make it all worth it.

When I was 14, my father was training me to drive by taking me out of school so that I could chauffeur him about 50 miles away from home in a gray-market (W123) 300D to meet a car-dealer client. It was the first time I’d ever seen the first version of the box-flared, Mitsu-turbo in the flesh. Sitting there in the showroom, so red, so aggressive.

My father went off to his meeting (he ran a small advertising agency and this dealer was the craziest of the semi-local dealers) and I was tasked with wandering the Chrysler/Dodge/Mitsu dealership and staying out of the way.

A lone 14-year old kid wandering ounce the lot created more questions than I wanted to deal with, so I ended up back in the showroom where the sales manager knew a little of the deal (probably not that I drove there) and left me alone to read the car catalogs. At least he did until I noticed that the keys were in the switch of this Mitsu..which cranked right up and sounded a lot better than I’d thought it would (it wasn’t as good as my neighbor’s old Boss 351).

Everyone in the showroom and apparently the surrounding county FLIPPED out. The manager vaulted his desk and nearly did a “Bo Duke” over the hood of the car to get to the keys. It turns out that while I’d not seen Roger Moore steal an AMX by driving it through a dealership window at this point in my life, apparently it was a real concern among car dealers in the years following. He was convinced I was a secret agent headed out to head off some voodo priest in a boat in the swamps of upstate SC (where there really aren’t any swamps, or voodo priests, or British secret agents)

The mass panic created by a 145lb blond-haired kid—in coat and tie no less—rev a car to redline a couple times in the showroom brought out the owner of dealership and my father. I was sure I was baked; but the owner looked around at the red-faced and sweaty sales guys and totally lost himself in gales of laughter. I was his favorite kid in the world after that, and he wanted me to come with Pop every time.

We shot a commercial that summer in which he wore a Patton-esque helmet and declared war on high prices. I held the stop-watch, watched the script and timed him down to 29.5 secs.

I never did get to drive one of those turbos though. Still bugs me to this day when I see one.

I still check for keys in every show-room car. One day I’ll take the time to make sure my kid knows to keep the clutch in when he pins the needle. I just hope that there are still cars that sound like cars (instead of cordless drills) when he gets there.

Yup thats a DSM and you do have to wind it out, s’fun tho it makes drifting using the throttle an occasion. Haha the first time I tried sno nuts with the new turbo and had to lay deep into the rpm’s I wasn’t ready for the hnnng inducing centrifugal force.

I like that color interior I forgot they came in a lighter tan. Mine is the black leather & a ‘93 . I have the same brake setup but with dba rotors. I’m tots jelly of those tail lights, tho...the amber corners are rare desirable bits.

I have indeed spun all 4 tires with the old evo 3 turbo and had the panicked sensation of a violent shove of power and noo one believes me when I try to explain it as if I’ve never driven a fast car before. They just see a kinda beat looking hatchback from the least inspiring era of car design.

Removing the balance shafts isn’t what everyone does, at least I haven’t gotten there yet. The fact it raises the oil pressure can be a major problem depending on what kinda turbo you run, if you have an oil restrictor/ inline filter and whether your oil feed comes from the head or the filter housing. Too much pressure will blow a bb turbo pretty fast.

His turbo is of the same Garett ball bearing family but a bit larger than mine (GT3082 vs 3076R) with Forced Performance’s custom .70a/r housing, flowing 65 lbs/min versus my 54ish. I am however running the same 20psi but with 93 octane programmed (7800 redline), the one good thing about living on the east....DSMers are the biggest turbo geeks you will ever meet every conceivable combo has been tested.

I’m at least glad my car sounds exactly the same. Sheesh also glad my transmission is a recent rebuild.
